HOMILY OF RT. REV. MSGR. JOSE B. MOLINA

PRAYER RALLY MASS, Plaza Rizal, Virac

January 19, 2001

A majority of one

Igua daang nagdiscourage kan raling ini. Malang-malang ngaya an. Dai man an nin maguinibo. So ultimo baga ngayang rali, dai ngani nag-sarong dosena an nagbali.

Kan madangog co na so enot na rali na magresign si Erap na dai nagsarong dosena an nag-iba sa rally, dai aco nadisganar, dai aco namundo.

Pagcadangog cong dai nagsarong dosena, kundi mga sampulo sana, sabi co, “Good!” At least there are 10 Catandungenos na igua nin courage to stand up. Tama na.

Mga tugang, it is not the numbers that count. Eleven versus ten but the numbers did not count. You can be a minority of one and all the rest are against you. But if you are for the truth, if you are for the good, you are a majority of one.

Sabi co sa sadiri co, minsan gabos na Catandungeno dai maquilabot, magsabi na pabayaan na sana an mga mangyayari, dai man quita caan nin maguiguinibo, sabi co, kung igua pang sarong Catandungeno, saro sana, just one, igua pa nin paglaom. Caya so enot na rally, sampulo? Sobra sa saro, igua kitang paglaom.

Sa nagsasabi man na ngaya malang-malang an, dai man quita caan na maguiguinibo, dai man camong maguiguinibo, patawadon nindo aco. Magamit aco nin lengguahe na medyo dai seguro appropriate but I do not mean to say anything that will offend.

An mga ga-isip na alog caan, mga tugang, iyo an an defeatist, defeatist, defeatist attitude. Dai man ngaya quitang maguinibo caan caya pabayae na an. Caya we become indifferent. Caya so mga naguiguibo nin sala, mas minacusog an boot tutal daing minacontra sainda. Caya padagos an paguiguibo nin karatan.

Kung ikukumparar, and this is where I ask your pardon kung an gamiton kong comparison medyo bacong appropriate, ikumpara ta sa sarong babae na pinag-atake.

Dae ca caan maguinibo ta maton an kalaban mo!”

Iyo daw an sasabihon mo? Will that be your advice? Ya mili dai ca ning maguiguinibo, an sasabihon mo, “Just relax and enjoy it?”

Iyan an thinking, mga tugang, iyan an nakakapaluya sa satuya - a defeatist attitude. Maluya ka, macusog an kalaban mo. But if you have right on your side, tumbahon ca man, matindog ka guiraray. Tumbahon ka na naman, tindog guiraray. An pagkadaog mo does not consist in the fact na natumba ka. Nanggana ka ta apesar na pirmi kang tumba, tindog man  guiraray. This is it.

Caya, mga tugang, dai na quita mag-indifferent. Do not say “I’m alone. I am helpless.” Dai quitang maguiguinibo ta an mayoriya arog caini an kaisipan. It takes a few good men to do nothing for evil to triumph. And we can say it takes only one person to do nothing to permit evil to triumph.

Familyar camo caidtong estorya “The Emperor Has No Clothes.” Aram man sana nindo na igua daang emperador na masyadong ma-vanity, an gusto omaw na pirmi, alagad dictador, maisog, tarakot saiya an mga tawo. Alagad very vain, kaya an saiyang grabeng interes an bado niya. Pirming ga-paguibo nin so pinakamagayon na bado. And he wanted nothing less than the most beautiful. Dae na nacocoang mas magayon pang bado sa saiyang mga sastre, so mga gatahi kan bado niya ta pigatatsaran so piga-dala saiya.

Ano  an guinibo kan mga sastre niya? An guinibo, honi ngaya, senyor emperador, the best, pinakamarhay na tela sa bilog na kinaban. Ipinabado saiya, magayon ngaya. Asin guinibo nindang bado. Pero sa katotoohan, dai man nin nakaptan so sastre. Nothing. Guinibong bado so Emperador, pagkaginayon ngaya, helinga ngaya an color. Bago dai man nin nakaptan na tela, dai man nin nakaptan na bado. Oho man so emperador, ong gayon ngaya talaga. Ibinado sa saiya. Wow ngaya, pagkaginuwapo mo! Tamang tama an bado mo. Bago dai man nin ibinado. Caya so emperador, hoba.

Asin sinda nagpoon na magparada. An emperador nagsakay sa saiyang carruaje, nakatindog tanganing maheling an kagayonan niya asin saiyang bado. So mga ciudadano talakot saiya, naheling tolos na si emperador dai man nin bado kundi hoba. Alagad ta natakot sinda, “Ong gayon, ong gayon! Pagkaginayon an bado kan emperador!” Pero an emperador, hoba!

Sarong aqui na pigabog-ong kan saiyang ama sa saiyang abaga, so aqui kuminurahaw – “Hoba an emperador!” The Emperor has no clothes!

It took a little child. Innocence. The innocent always speak the truth. Kitang mga adults, kitang mga magulang, we allow to be terrorized. That’s why evil triumphs, because fear silences our mouths. It is the young, the innocent, who can shout “The Emperor has no clothes! Hoba an Emperador!”

Ngonian sa Virac, sa Catanduanes, at long last, nagkurahaw kita, “Hoba an Presidente, daing bado!”

Mga tugang, the truth, only the truth dai nanggad pagtahoban. Helinga an nangyayari sa minatahob sa katotoohan. An katotoohan palan an helang asthma. Kung tahoban mo daa iyan, dae makaginhawa caya an guinibo caan an gatahob saiya pigasipa. Hilnga so once na nagtahob sa katotoohan. Ngonian may peligro na puloton sa kangkungan.

And we have to say it here: Alam man sana niyo. I was a close friend of our senator and I am still. But it is sad. When we were looking for a star, someone we could be proud of, he failed us. Mamundo. Sa panahon nin diklom, naghanap kita nin bitoon, sadiring bitoon, dai niato nakoa.

But let us not allow hatred to enter out hearts. Every time we condemn a public official, from the local official to the national up to the President, every time we say na “maraot kamo, makasalan kamo, corrupt kamo, dai kamong integridad,” do not forget that the one finger that you point to them, an kalaban tolong guramoy na ga-puntirya sa saimo.

Sisay an nagpili caiyan? Bacong kita?

Crimes of that magnitude did not begin up there. It began in my heart. It began in your heart.

Kan naguiguibo nin sala so mga kandidato, tinugotan niato na maguibo nin sala. Kan duholan kita nin cuarta tanganing bacalon an satong boto, baco sanang boto an pinabacal ta, sagcod an satuyang calag. Crimes of great magnitude do not begin up there. They start right here with you, me.

So EDSA daa was one of the greatest moments of the Filipinos. Inolomaw kita nin kinaban and we were proud of ourselves. But after EDSA, what happened? Nothing changed. We changed a President, we did not change our hearts. We changed an administration, we did not change our values.

Caya ta uya kita, an prinsipal na katuyohan baco sanang pahare-on an satong presidente, baco sanang cambiohon an administrasyon. An satong prinsipal na katuyohan, pahare-on an karatan, baco sana sa puso ni Presidente Estrada, kundi sa puso ko, sa puso mo.

Do not look at the president as an evildoer. Look into your hearts. That evil started in my heart. Caya an pighahagad pagcacambio baco sa luwas, kundi digdi ngona sa satuya.

Maabot na naman an eleksyon. Diyan ta maheling if we deserve, do we really deserve a new president, do we really deserve a new administration? Helingon ta sa maabot na eleksyon.

Ang gayon if we put up a covenant, gabos na uya digdi ngonian na banggui, if we could make a covenant, “I will never sell my vote!” Pacanghan ko an harong mi nin placard, baco nang “Resign Erap,” kundi duman sa harong mi may placard, it read “My vote is not for sale!”

And, please, do not be offended. Camo man na mga elective officials, please, an enot ming caipuhan bacong tinampo. An enot ming caipuhan bacong mga tulay. An caipuhan mi inspirasyon.

We want to be inspired by public officials of integrity, of morality, of moral courage, who will make us proud of them. We want to be able to tell the Albayanos, we want to be able to tell the Manilenos, sa Catanduanes an opisyales mi are officials na puedeng ipaghambog. Because they are honest, because they are dedicated, because they are men and women of integrity.

(Rain cut short Msgr. Molina’s soul-searching homily)
