Murdered
man knew killers The alleged rebel returnee who was fatally shot outside his home the other week in Caramoran apparently knew his killers, police said. In its report to PNP provincial director Supt. Freddie O. Panen, Caramoran police authorities said that shortly after the Jan. 12 shooting, Guiamlong barangay tanod executive officer Eugenio Morillo asked the fallen Wilfredo Ortil y Icaro, 46, married, as to whether he knew the men who killed him, and Ortil allegedly answered, "Mga kairiba ko." Ortil died while being taken to Virac by his brother on board a passenger bus, his body unloaded in front of Camp Francisco Camacho early morning of Jan. 13. According to the official report from Caramoran police, four men armed with an M-16 rifle and handguns abducted Ortil from his home at about 10 P.M. of Jan. 12. At a distance of about 6 to 7 meters from his house, one of the armed quartet pointed a short firearm at Ortil but the victim tried to grab the handgun. Another man fired his M-16 rifle once at Ortil's stomach, causing him to fall to the ground. The victim's wife and daughter Maryann managed to bring Ortil inside their house but two of the armed men followed and verified Ortil's wound before fleeing on foot. Sources at the PNP provincial office said Ortil was a former New People's Army regular who returned to civilian life and was recruited in the `80s by the defunct Philippine Constabulary as a member of the dreaded CHDF. They claimed that the NPA contingent here probably wanted him back but he refused. No statement owning or disowning the killing has been released by the NPA command in the province. |
