Major Developments
Drive
vs. `hot' lumber renewed The
Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Community Environment and Natural
Resources Office (CENRO) heightened its campaign against the transport of
illegally-cut lumber all over the province, seizing more than 300 board
feet of sawn lumber in the past week. In
Pandan town, acting chief of police SPO4 Nilo Abines led an operation
against the illegal cutting of trees in three barangays, confiscating a
total of 170 board feet last January 14. His haul consisted of 60 board
feet each from barangays Libod and Tariwara, plus another 50 from barangay
Bagawang. Two
days later in Virac, PO2 Whelming Escaro, PO2 Lino Obias and PO1 Arlan
Sevilla confiscated seven pieces of 2x6x7 sawn lumber in Cavinitan at 4
P.M. of Jan. 16. Then,
on Jan. 18, PO2 Obias, along with four other lawmen, intercepted five Buyo
residents transporting 15 pieces of hot lumber along the provincial road
near the residence of a former barangay captain. Arrested
were Orby Zafe y Magtangob, 39, married and a farmer; Andy Soliman y
Marquez, 30, married, a laborer; Renato Francisco y Tabo, 28, married, a
farmer; Arnel Tria y Marquez, 19, single, farmer; and, Allen Samar y
Magdaraog, 42, married, a laborer. They were apparently apprehended
transporting the lumber on foot from Buyo to Bigaa for delivery to a
businessman inside West Garden Subdivision. The
following day, a team from the CENRO composed of forester Jomar Laroza,
forester Merleo Pavinicio, forest ranger Carlos Garcia and forest ranger
Gil Soloria, accompanied by PO1 Allan Almanza and PO1 Rey Cedo of the PNP
Provincial Reaction Team, confiscated 18 pieces of illegally-sawn lumber
being unloaded from a jeep at about 8:10 A.M. of Jan. 19 in barangay
Calatagan. The
jeepney, with plate number EVD-743 and owned by Verman Zafe of Buyo, was
reportedly being driven by one Lolito Zafe y Vargas, 26, single and also
of Buyo, when intercepted by the CENRO team. |
