The province's individual and team entries dominated the field in the recent 15th Young Scientists Quiz regional level competition held in Laguna, with Catanduanes entering the national finals ranked number one.

Head of delegation Dr. Salve T. San Juan, Education Supervisor I for Science and Health, disclosed that Marichelle S.J. Carilimdiliman of the Division Pilot Special Science and Math Class (DPSSMC) at the Virac Pilot Elementary School won as regional champion, earning P2,000 and a gold medal.

In earning P2,000 and a gold medal, Marichelle recorded the highest score of all individual contestants in regional level contests in the country - 37 points out of 40 items.

Her coach, Mrs. Nora T. Sales, won a plaque of recognition and P1,000 while Certificates of Recognition were given the school principal, district supervisor, division supervisor and schools division superintendent.

Carilimdiliman also joined Sarah Jean Zafe of Sto. Domingo Elementary School in Virac and Ian San Gaspar of Bacak Elementary School in Bagamanoc as they triumphed in the team competition.  Each member of the team received a gold medal and P2,000 cash, with their coaches - Romeo Zafe for Sarah Jean and Sylvia Echaluce for Ian - getting plaques of recognition and P1,000 each. Certificates of recognition were given to principals, supervisors and the division superintendent.

The team will compete in the National Finals set January 22-25, 2001 at Traders Hotel in Manila, with all finalists in both individual and team categories getting P3,000 each and a medal, in addition to the big prizes at stake. The advisers will be given P1,000 each.

Sponsored by the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC), the quiz was organized by the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS).
