Cat'nes bet off to 2000 PSQ nat'l finals

Two freshmen of the Catanduanes State Colleges snatched the top two places in the 2000 Philippine Statistics Quiz regional eliminations, earning one of them the right to represent Bicol in the national finals scheduled yesterday (Dec. 5).

Moreno D. Tabios, Jr. ruled the quiz held at the NEDA regional office in Legaspi City last November 21, with fellow CSC student Seth B. Posada garnering second place. The duo received cash prizes and trophies for the feat, the first time bets from Catanduanes got the top two places in the regional competition.

Tabios will join other freshmen university and college students from the National Capital Region and the other 13 regions of the country in the 9th PSQ National Finals where a total cash prize of P90,000, trophies and certificates await the winners. He and his coach, Rudy D. Tablizo, will be given modest accommodations and two-way transportation expenses to Manila.

Endorsed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Statistical Research and Training Center, and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the PSQ has seen Region 4 (Southern Tagalog) representatives besting students from all the other regions from 1994 to 1998. Last year, however, the Cordillera Administrative Region ended Region 4" five-year winning streak.

To help the participants prepare for the nationwide quiz, the telephony-based NSO Helpline Plus! - one of the contest's major sponsors - also provided the students with comprehensive statistical information on various industries.

By just dialing Helpline's number, 737-1111, quick statistics on price indices, foreign trade, domestic trade, labor and employment, business and industry, private building construction, monthly integrated survey on selected industries, income and expenditure, health population, family planning and literacy rate can be obtained from the Interactive Voice Response-based statistics module.
