Wireless
Internet for rural schools
Rep.
Leandro B. Verceles, Jr. last week promised to
link rural schools to the information
superhighway through the use of wireless
technology.
In
his lecture on the e-Commerce law during the 1st
Catanduanes ICT Convention at the CC auditorium,
the three-termer solon said the Internet linkage
for barrio and schools is part of his
two-pronged economic approach for the island
province: agricultural development and food
security, and the development of services under
information and communications technology such
as tourism, handicraft, local industries and
jobs.
The
gubernatorial bet also explained that through
the CatNet, the provision of computer
infrastructure development, human resource
training and educational advancement will result
in better skilled local graduates who can then
apply for higher-paying jobs in Manila and
abroad. It will likewise encourage the
development of local ICT industries for the
employment of the youth.
"The
basics will be there, but the way to go is to
equips student with computer skills,"
Verceles noted. He said his personal conviction
is that local governments need a new vision for
a new and more progressive Catanduanes using the
powerful combination of ICT.
The
solon also bared a plan to give free e-mail
addresses to every Catandunganon within one
year, to be spearheaded by a foundation named
after his late father, former Ambassador Leandro
I. Verceles, Sr. Describing the Internet as a
strategic economic tool, Verceles said the
Internet economy could be Catanduanes'
salvation.
Also
present during the same forum were Atty. Joseph
A. Santiago, who spoke on NTC policies and
communications laws and issuances, as well as
Virac Mayor Jose U. Alberto II, who welcomed
guests and participants, CC president Ephraim
Antonio Gianan and PBM Edwin T. Tanael.
