NSO starts 2001  with income survey

The National Statistics Office starts 2001 as the primary statistical agency of the government with the regular Quarterly Labor Force Survey and the 2000 Family Income and Expenditures Survey (FIES 2000) this January.

The Labor Force Survey (LFS) is a nationwide survey of households conducted regularly to gather data on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population. Primarily geared towards the estimation of the levels of employment and unemployment in the country, it also aims to provide a quantitative framework for the preparation of plans and formulation of policies affecting labor market.

On the other hand, the 2000 Family Income and Expenditures Survey (FIES 2000) is the main source of data on family income and expenditures. From 1957 to 1975, the FIES was conducted every five years. However, in 1985, a new series of FIES had begun and is now conducted every three years. The FIES provides data that are needed in the different aspects of the country's economic conditions.

This survey aims to gather data on family income and family living expenditures and related information affecting income and expenditure levels and patterns in the Philippines; determine the sources of income and income distribution, levels of living and spending patterns, and the degree on inequality among families; provide benchmark information to update weights in the estimation of consumer price inded (CPI); and, provide inputs in the estimation of the country's poverty threshold and incidence.

Actual interview of sample households is from January 8-31, 2001. Commonwealth Act 951 authorizes NSO to conduct censuses and surveys. Pursuant to the provision of Section 4 of this Act, information obtained from the respondents shall be held confidential and shall not be divulged to any person except authorized NSO personnel acting in the performance of their duties.

The NSO extends its gratitude for the continuous support and cooperation of sample respondents.
