Ex-NPA slain by comrades?

A former member of the New People's Army was fatally shot by three unidentified men outside his home last Friday evening in a remote Caramoran barangay.

According to sketchy reports, the victim, a certain Cortel, went out of his house in barangay Guiamlong at 10 P.M. of January 12 after three men knocked and called out "Kabayan!" Shortly after, a shot rang out, with the victim's family finding him slumped unconscious on the ground.

A brother allegedly stopped a passing Virac-bound bus and loaded the mortally wounded Cortel. It was about 4:30 A.M. the following day when the bus disgorged the already dead shooting victim in front of the steel gates of the PNP provincial police headquarters at Camp Francisco Camacho.

Sources say Cortel's body bore a single bullet wound just below the navel, with the bullet ending somewhere near his buttocks. His wife reportedly refused to elaborate on the incident and did not say whether she saw other men visiting here husband on other occasions. She reportedly did not have enough money for embalming and funeral expenses but was referred by a lawman to Vice Governor Alfred M. Aquino.

According to a police source, Cortel was allegedly an NPA member more than 10 years ago, came to Guiamlong and was apparently recruited as a member of the defunct CHDF. The source said the NPA here probably wanted him back but Cortel refused.

Meanwhile, blast fishers have returned to rich fishing grounds off two coastal barangays of the capital town.

Last week, municipal agricultural technicians Ramon Samonte and Angel Valeza relayed to the police the statement of Batag residents Norberto Talan and Nestor Gonzales that since January 5, illegal fishing incidents have transpired at the sea off barangays Batag and Marilima. The residents said the dynamite fishers came from San Andres town and identified one of the boat's crew as a certain "Uloy" of barangay Yocti.
