Globe cellsite now operational

True to its word, Globe Telecom has started operating its newly constructed cellsite before the start of the new year.

Special Projects and Implementation project manager Joey S. Guerrero of Globe's Mobile Communications Group switched on the multi-million peso cellular equipment at 7 P.M. of December 31, 2000, sending Globe users into early celebration. Although still few in number, users of Globe cellphones are expected to swell into hundreds as customers have been dissatisfied with busy signals on their Smart units allegedly due to limited transmitter capacity.

Guerrero was sent here last week by Globe officials to oversee the cellsite's complete integration with Manila and other networks. Test calls were made, with the tower's signal found to reach as far as the Bato Maternity and Children's Hospital (BMCH) on the east side, just past barangay Sto. Domingo in Virac and in barangay Talisoy, also in the capital town.

Guerrero told the Tribune that, barring inclement weather, structural work at the site is expected to be completed this week. He disclosed that the standby generator for the cellular equipment has yet to be installed but there is a standby battery pack that would ensure the tower's operation for an additional 12 hours in case of the unlikely event of a serious power outage.

Just before Christmas, Globe's systems installation contractor, Nokia, dispatched systems engineer Jonathan Rodriguez and commissioning engineer Jorgen Lindgren to initialize the so-called Base Station Transceiver. The cellsite would be capable of handling 60 calls at the same time.
