Major Developments
Red
Cross still relevant - Loyola Philippine
National Red Cross (PNRC) Secretary General Lourdes R. Loyola affirmed
last week that the Red Cross movement is and will still be relevant in the
coming millennium even as humanitarian organizations and similar groups
are mushrooming in the nation. In
asking the PNRC Catanduanes chapter board officers and volunteers to
reflect on where they were now in the service of humanity, Mrs. Loyola
said that for "as long as society remains imperfect, the need for
human intervention will never end." In
her message during the Biennial Chapter Assembly last week, the PNRC
official urged officials and volunteers to think of the people's real
needs, not just what caregivers perceive as their needs. Urging
them to search for ways to help the most vulnerable, Loyola encouraged
them to work to be the best among the country's humanitarian
organizations, with "compassion in our hearts as our guidepost." Noting
that the limited resources has curtailed the amount of assistance given by
the Red Cross, Loyola nevertheless pushed for the increased awareness of
the organization among the people as 85 percent of its benefactors are
unaware of PNRC's five other major services, aside from relief and
rehabilitation work in calamity areas. For
his part, Chairman Concepcion bared that the chapter needs the support of
the community even now that it has its own building. He also sought the
assistance of the national office in undertaking the repair and renovation
of the edifice which was formerly a pelota court. Concepcion
also paid tributed to former board chairman and PBM Fredeswindo T. Gianan,
Sr. who was instrumental in the acquisition of the chapter headquarters
from the provincial government, to add to his many accomplishments. The
board observed a moment of prayer for the late chairman. In
his welcome message in behalf of Gov. Hector S. Sanchez who was in Manila,
PBM Edwin Tanael thanked the PNRC through Mrs. Loyola for the assistance
given to Catanduanes in times of calamity in the past few years. He
assured the PNRC of the province's total support for its programs. Tanael
also backed David L. Templonuevo, Jr. for the position of chapter
administrator, saying that it would be a great loss for the chapter if
Templonuevo accepts a lucrative offer of a national PNRC post. |
