A student of the Division Pilot Special Science and Math Class in Virac
took first place in the investigatory project
category of the 15th Young Scientists Quiz held
recently in Manila.
Marichelle SJ Carilimdiliman convinced the board of judges headed by
University of the Philippines Professor Porferio
P. Jesuetas of the practicability of her
project, "Volcanic Rocks as Fuel Supplement
and Heat Extender" during the quiz held
Feb. 13-16 at the Traders Hotel.
Coached by Mrs. Nora T. Sales, Carilimdiliman also anchored her team to
fifth place in the team category of the Science
Quiz. The other team members were Sarah Jean
Zafe of Sto. Domingo Elementary School in Virac,
with Romeo Zafe as coach, and Ian San Gaspar of
Bacak Elementary School in Bagamanoc, with Mrs.
Sylvia Echaluce as coach.
A total of 18,035 pupils took the initial elimination process given by
the Philippine Foundation for Science and
Technology through the Department of Science and
Technology (DOST) at the division and regional
levels.
Only 20 pupils made it to the national grand finals - 15 for the team
category and five for the individual category -
with Carilimdiliman failing to make it to the
cut-off score despite topping the regional
eliminations.
The science investigatory project category was aimed at creating
awareness among Filipino students of the
significance of scientific investigation and to
provide a forum for intellectual and social
interaction among participants and experts.
