It's
back to basics - SSS
The
SSS political team wants government to return to
the basics, from food security to sports
development and the repair of neglected public
infrastructure.
In
the forum sponsored by the CC Supreme Student
Council last week, Atty. Joseph A. Santiago said
the province needs the repair of its neglected
road network and the improvement of district
hospitals. He also called for Catanduanes to
develop its human resource through education and
to regain lost glory in regional and national
sports competitions.
"Good
governance will lift the province and its people
out of poverty," he said. "It's back
to basics, not Internet, not fiber optics."
For Catanduanes to become self-sufficient in
food, it must encourage local production and
minimize importation.
Comparing
the team to the Verceles couple, Santiago said
in an earlier meeting in San Andres that the
three of them will work better since it is a
meeting of different minds, unlike their
opponents who will decide the fate of the
province in the privacy of their bedroom.
On
support for agriculture, Gov. Sanchez explained
that his administration had already prepared a
Food Security Program with the help of former
Gov. Vicente M. Alberto as consultant but the
projects have yet to be started due to Rep.
Leandro Verceles' meddling in the approval of
the budgets.
Vice
gubernatorial candidate Cesar V. Sarmiento
remarked that they have common goals but
stressed that he cannot forget what his father,
former Gov. Severo C. Alcantara, espoused in his
stint: rice in every pot, fish on every table,
light in every home and medicine in every
cabinet. He said he will push assistance for
farmers and fishermen as well as rural
electification.
Among
those who attended the forum were PBMs Rafael
Zuniega, Edgar Tapel and Edwin Tanael; Mayors
Cito Alberto of Virac and Lorenzo Templonuevo,
Jr. of Bato; Vice Mayor Gregorio Angeles of
Panganiban, who will be running for mayor;
former governors Severo Alcantara and Vicente
Alberto; CC president Ephraim Antonio Gianan,
students and some newsmen and broadcasters.
