PNP
vows to eradicate
illegal
activities
A
serious PNP provincial director last week
pledged to eradicate all forms of illegal
activities in Catanduanes "in due
time" and to do his best in the performance
of mandated functions.
Saying
that he is not joking, Supt. Freddie O. Panen
made the promise as he awarded citations to
outstanding police personnel and civilian
supporters during last Saturday's celebration of
the 10th PNP Day at Camp Francisco Camacho.
Col.
Panen said that in two weeks he had already
eradicated "lotteng" and is now
addressing PBA "ending," which he said
would be erased in four months, otherwise police
chiefs and heads of operations and intelligence
sections would be reshuffled. "I am not
joking," he stressed, "When I say
something, I will mean it."
Noting
that the campaign might have to force policemen
to change their attitudes, the PNP provincial
director disclosed that he will not sacrifice
the integrity of the majority for the sake of a
few bad eggs in the force.
He
asked for the understanding of the people,
adding that the problems of illegal gambling,
illegal drugs, illegal fishing and illegal
logging will be addressed one by one.
The
PNP head made the vow in response to a call from
Gov. Hector S. Sanchez for the police
authorities to address the problems, including
insurgency, "at once before everything goes
out of hand and grows to crisis
proportions." The governor pledged his
administration's full support to police
undertakings despite the lack of funds.
For
his part, guest speaker CSC President Dr. Adolfo
S. Bagadiong lauded Panen's leadership for its
well-defined goals and specific objectives even
as he asked the command to redouble efforts in
fighting crime, particularly illegal drugs.
He
also sought the police's adequate support in
safeguarding the environment from misuse and
exploitation as the PNP plays a vital role in
the preservation of the ecology. Bagadiong said
the police can be assured of the people's
support and thus ensure full service to its
clientele by shaping up its ranks. He added that
the local police should continue enlisting the
support of civilians in order to achieve more
gains in their multi-pronged campaigns.
Recognized
and given awards during the celebration were the
Virac municipal police station as outstanding
station for 2000; Supt. Rande V. Rosero of Virac
