pupil tops Young Scientists Quiz The
province's individual and team entries dominated the field in the recent
15th Young Scientists Quiz regional level competition held in Laguna, with
Catanduanes entering the national finals ranked number one. Head
of delegation Dr. Salve T. San Juan, Education Supervisor I for Science
and Health, disclosed that Marichelle S.J. Carilimdiliman of the Division
Pilot Special Science and Math Class (DPSSMC) at the Virac Pilot
Elementary School won as regional champion, earning P2,000 and a gold
medal. In
earning P2,000 and a gold medal, Marichelle recorded the highest score of
all individual contestants in regional level contests in the country - 37
points out of 40 items. Her
coach, Mrs. Nora T. Sales, won a plaque of recognition and P1,000 while
Certificates of Recognition were given the school principal, district
supervisor, division supervisor and schools division superintendent. Carilimdiliman
also joined Sarah Jean Zafe of Sto. Domingo Elementary School in Virac and
Ian San Gaspar of Bacak Elementary School in Bagamanoc as they triumphed
in the team competition. Each
member of the team received a gold medal and P2,000 cash, with their
coaches - Romeo Zafe for Sarah Jean and Sylvia Echaluce for Ian - getting
plaques of recognition and P1,000 each. Certificates of recognition were
given to principals, supervisors and the division superintendent. The
team will compete in the National Finals set January 22-25, 2001 at
Traders Hotel in Manila, with all finalists in both individual and team
categories getting P3,000 each and a medal, in addition to the big prizes
at stake. The advisers will be given P1,000 each. Sponsored
by the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC), the quiz was organized by
the Philippine Foundation for Science and Technology in cooperation with
the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of
Education, Culture and Sports (DECS).
