off to 2000 PSQ nat'l finals Two
freshmen of the Catanduanes State Colleges snatched the top two places in
the 2000 Philippine Statistics Quiz regional eliminations, earning one of
them the right to represent Bicol in the national finals scheduled
yesterday (Dec. 5). Moreno
D. Tabios, Jr. ruled the quiz held at the NEDA regional office in Legaspi
City last November 21, with fellow CSC student Seth B. Posada garnering
second place. The duo received cash prizes and trophies for the feat, the
first time bets from Catanduanes got the top two places in the regional
competition. Tabios
will join other freshmen university and college students from the National
Capital Region and the other 13 regions of the country in the 9th PSQ
National Finals where a total cash prize of P90,000, trophies and
certificates await the winners. He and his coach, Rudy D. Tablizo, will be
given modest accommodations and two-way transportation expenses to Manila. Endorsed
by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Statistical
Research and Training Center, and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED),
the PSQ has seen Region 4 (Southern Tagalog) representatives besting
students from all the other regions from 1994 to 1998. Last year, however,
the Cordillera Administrative Region ended Region 4" five-year
winning streak. To
help the participants prepare for the nationwide quiz, the telephony-based
NSO Helpline Plus! - one of the contest's major sponsors - also provided
the students with comprehensive statistical information on various
industries.
