Vol. XXI No. 1

March 14, 2001

Virac, Catanduanes

Major Developments

List of voters here trimmed by 2,182

The total number of registered numbers in the island province of Catanduanes was trimmed down to 103,988 after the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) sanitized voters lists of double entries, ghosts as well as transferees.

Acting Provincial Election Supervisor Amelia L. Arizabal told the Tribune that the number of voters went down by 2,182 from the previously reported 106,170 scattered across the province's 683 precincts.

The 103,988 voters are divided in the 11 municipalities as follows (with increase/decrease in parentheses): Bagamanoc - 5,005 (+102); Baras - 5,898 (+129); Bato, 8,680 (+151); Caramoran - 10,865 (-41); Gigmoto - 10,865 (-373); Pandan - 8,341 (-151); Panganiban - 4,246 (+40); San Andres - 13,190 (-2,136); San Miguel - 6,556 (-13); Viga - 8,876 (+194); and, Virac, 28,384.

Percentage-wise, Virac holds the largest share of the votes (27.30 percent) while Gigmoto has the smallest at 3.80 percent, with the rest of the towns dividing the rest: San Andres, 12.68%; Caramoran, 10.45%; Viga, 8.54%; Bato, 8.35%; Pandan, 8.02%; San Miguel, 6.30%; Baras, 5.67%; Bagamanoc, 4.81%; and, Panganiban, 4.08%.

The three biggest towns - Virac, San Andres, and Caramoran - accounts for 52,439 voters or 50.43 percent of the total, a truly tempting prize for candidates to top provincial posts. In the eight-town East district, candidates for Sangguniang Panlalawigan will be fighting for their share of the total 51,549 votes.

On the other hand, the number of precincts edged up a little from the previous 613 to today's 638, broken down as follows: Virac, 169; San Andres, 98; Caramoran, 69;  Viga, 60; Pandan, 59; Bato, 57; San Miguel, 41; Baras, 37; Bagamanoc, 32; Panganiban, 32; and, Gigmoto, 29.

The initial total of 106,170 was reached after the COMELEC conducted a registration for new voters from Oct. 17 to Dec. 27 last year. However, the number of voters as sanitized may still increase if Malacanang and youth groups successfully pressure COMELEC to allow an estimated four million disenfranchised youths to register before April.
