All set for Dec. 2 slugfest in Virac

All systems are go for the biggest professional boxing festival to be staged in this island province this December 2 at the Virac Sports Center, with no less than WBC featherweight champ Manny Pacquiao making a ringside appearance.

The other Saturday, about 250 boxing fans had a foretaste of what Bakbakan sa Virac 2000 has to offer when they trooped to the venue to witness Virac sluggers get wiped out by their fellow amateurs from Viga and Bato for the right to face Camarines Sur's best.

Here are the results of the provincial eliminations held last Nov. 18: Powderweight Jose Balmaceda (Viga) defeated Rudy Mar Bagadiong (Virac); Vacuumweight Julian Abines d. Roldan Pagsiat (Virac); Paperweight Bernabe Concepcion (Viga) d. Rogelio Ibardaloza (Virac); Pinweight Karl Mark Temena (Bato) d. Melchor Abines (Viga); Lightflyweight Mario Olesco (Viga) d. William Resurreccion (Virac); Flyweight Ryan Aringo (Bato) d. Buyan Panti (Virac); Junior bantamweight Alvin Ogalesco (Viga) d. Joemar Alcantara (Virac);

Bantamweight Ramil Aringo (Bato) d. Bonifacio Tugay (Virac); Super featherweight Benjamin Rojas (Bato) d. Christopher Coching (Virac); Featherweight Domingo Tarnate (Viga) d. Constantino Quintal (Virac); Dexter Ian Olonan (Viga) d. Elton Tubiera (Bato); and, Light flyweight Jun Tulipat (Viga) d. Rodel Mendoza (Bato). Also eliminated were flyweight Bernie Concepcion and bantamweight Noe Obal.

The winners will face Camarines Sur simonpures Ernesto Federico (35 kg.), Christopher Otar (42 kg.), Christopher Barogo (48 kg.), Betito delos Santos (57 kg.); Rodulfo Pasa, Jr. (60 kg.), Rogelio Dapadap (45 kg.), Elizalde Sabeniano (42 kg.), and Richard Asure (48 kg.). Champions will earn a trophy and P1,500 cash while runnerups will get P750.

Promoted by Elorde International Promotions in coordination with the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) Catanduanes Chapter headed by Roberto "Abing" Rodulfo, the Bakbakan features as its main event a 10-round junior flyweight contest between RP No. 9 Albert Cesa of the Elorde-Cebu boxing stable and RP No. 4 Alex Guevarra of Mandaluyong Gym.

Four supporting pro bouts spice up the action: Aden Sarco of Elorde-Leyte vs. Buddy Salvador of Obido boxing stable in Baguio City (6 rounds-126 lbs.); Eldert Romero of Elorde-Samar vs. Rene Banares of Obido (6 rds.- 115 lbs.); Danny Boy Toyogon of Elorde-Cagayan de Oro vs. Gualberto Tayabas of Obido (6 rds.-106 lbs.); and, Elden de la Cruz of Elorde-Samar vs. Rodulfo Abad of L&M Gym in Manila (4 rds.-123 lbs.).

The event is sponsored by National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Joseph A. Santiago, with the municipal government of Virac, Sangguniang Kabataan municipal federation, Asian Spirit Airlines, Catanduanes Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), Square & Compass Club, and La Tondena Distillers as co-sponsors. Seats have been reasonably priced at P500 for special ringside, P200 for ringside and P30 for general admission. Tickets are now available at Virac Pioneer Grocery, Romero Signs and Sangguniang Kabataan of Gogon Centro.

The events is intended to raise funds for the PNP"s SAMAKA-Ugnayan of Virac barangay captains and the SAMAKA-Peace for Oplan Droga.
