`Big Heart' consults health workers, farmers

GIGMOTO - In pursuit of its pro-poor and pro-farmer initiatives in the countryside, the Big Heart Foundation, Inc. recently met with barangay health workers and farmers here to help them draw up a sustainable action plan for their respective barangays.

Armando T. Guerrero, who founded Big Heart together with Roberto V. Tatad, said the main thrust of their consultation and dialogue with health workers, small farmers and fishermen in Gimoto is to be able to identify and respond to their basic needs. "Big Heart intends to help the people help themselves through self-help projects," Guerrero added.

In one such meeting last week, Guerrero acknowledged the sacrifices of BHWs in the delivery of health services to poor families, saying that while their work is being made in the spirit of volunteerism, their services and contribution to the local government are not fully appreciated. As a gesture of appreciation, Guerrero donated T-shirts to 70 BHWs in Gigmoto in behalf of the foundation.

Meanwhile, Guerrero also vowed to do something about the current price of abaca which is now pegged at P13 per kilo in Gigmoto. A main source of livelihood in this town, abaca fiber used to command prices as high was P28 in buying stations here. Guerrero and Tatad, both natives of Gigmoto, are now enlisting resources and manpower in scouting a better buying price of abaca fiber in the province.

Owner of the Domstar Investigation Security and Protective Agency based in Project 4, Quezon City, the 41-year old Ding Guerrero is reportedly running for mayor in the May 14 elections along with buy-and-sell businessman Bebot Tatad, 45, as his running mate.
