"Asset" fingered in thieveries

A police "asset" utilized in a recent anti-drug buy-bust operation has been implicated in two incidents of theft in the capital town.

Last January 13, Venus Tatel, 23, of Sta. Elena, complained to policemen that her Canon camera was stolen while it was placed inside  her knapsack left on a bench inside the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

The camera was recovered in the possession of one Florenia Balisacan of Salvacion, who alleged that it was sold to her by tricycle driver Ferdinand Camacho, 43. Police said a companion of Camacho claimed it was sold to them by Jesus Icalabis, a native of Pandan who is reportedly an asset of local policemen.

Last Dec. 24, Rev. Fr. Francis Sarmiento of Cabugao parish lost his Motorola handheld radio transceiver while it was placed inside his service jeep parked in front of the Virac Diocese compound. The radio was recovered last Jan. 5 in possession of Icalabis.

It may be recalled that last Jan. 10, lawmen arrested Las Pinas native Jordan Tojon, 19, and seized three plastic sachets of shabu from him in a buy-bust operation in an alley beside the A. Pura Store in front of the Catanduanes State Colleges. It was Icalabis who posed as a buyer in the mission, presenting his Seiko 5 watch as payment for the illegal drug.

In a related development, a man selling gasoline in a temporary, roadside stall was forced to transfer his store when he was hit by robbers for two consecutive nights.

Jose Ubalde y Reyes, married and a resident of San Isidro Village, complained to police that for two consecutive midnights on Jan. 12 and 13, his gasoline store near the Iglesia ni Cristo church was ransacked by unknown culprits who detached the tie wire securing the window and destroyed the padlock.

The robbers stole a total of 53 liters of gasoline and about 10 bottles of motor oil, making their getaway on board a tricycle, whose driver was identified by a witness as a certain "Kano" of San Isidro Village.
