PNP anti-gambling drive nets six

No big fish yet, but a resuscitated campaign by the Philippine National Police against illegal gambling activities has led to the arrest of six persons last week, including two involved in the still rampant "lotteng" numbers game.

In a single day, on Jan. 17, the police arrested five of them in the capital town of Virac, starting at 9:30 A.M. when PO2 Lino Obias apprehended Edison Malinana y Bobier, 39, married and a resident of San Pablo, while collecting bets for the "ending" game at the second floor of the Virac Public Market. Seized from him were temporary receipt and P200 cash.

Thirty minutes later, SPO1 Roger Masagca, SPO1 Noel Sunga, PO2 Whelming Escaro and PO1 Arlan Sevilla swooped down on the temporary parking area of Bato and San Miguel-bound tricycles.

Caught in the act of playing dice in front of the Catanduanes Hotel were Roland Tasarra y Tanteo, 36, married, a tricycle driver from Aroyao Pequeno, Bato; Roberto Traquena y Mendoza, 31, married and a tricycle driver from Cabugao, Bato; and pedicab driver Richard Tabinas of Palnab, Virac. The tem recovered the dice and P110 in bets.

Then at 7:45 P.M., PO2 Obias and PO2 Escaro apprehended Renato Marquez y Panti, 40, married and a jobless resident of Calatagan, while in the act of soliciting "lotteng" bets to be remitted to alleged operator Engr. Natalio Popa, Jr. Seized from hime were P1,443.75 in bets and three pieces of yellow pad paper bearing the name "Elmer Vargas" and "Calatagan." The police also impounded Marquez's unlicensed Yamaha RS100 motorcycle.

Earlier in the week, PO1 Jame Ronatay collared Ruben Quintal y Magdaraog, 41, married and a resident of San Pablo, while soliciting "lotteng" bets. He gave up two temporary receipts and P300 in bets.
