Voters here now 106,170

The number of registered voters in Catanduanes has climbed past the hundred-thousand mark, with the recent voter's registration campaign pushing the total to 106,170.

Acting Provincial Election Supervisor Amelia L. Arizabal of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said that preliminary data indicate that the voting population increased by 19.91 percent from the May 1998 figure of 88,544.

Of the 17,626 new voters, 15,764 or nearly 90 percent came from the voter's registration campaign conducted by the COMELEC's 11 municipal offices from October 17 to December 27 last year.

The northern town of Pandan registered the biggest jump in the number of registered voters from 8,280 in 1998 to 10,906, an increase of 2,626 or 31.71 percent. On the other hand, only 621 voters were added  to the registry in Bagamanoc, which now has 4,903 or 14.5 percent higher than the previous figure of 4,282.

In San Andres, 2,355 new voters were added to the list and the town now has a total of 15,326. The capital town added 4,542 more to the 1998 figure of 23,926, pushing its total to 28,468.

Meanwhile the number of precincts rose to 613 from the previous 573, with Baras gaining six, Bato 10, Pandan and Panganiban two each, and Virac accounting for 21 new precincts.

Here's the tentative list: Bagamanoc - 4903 voters; Baras - 5,769; Bato - 8,529; Caramoran - 10,906; Gigmoto - 4,320; Pandan - 8,492; Panganiban - 4,206; San Andres - 15,326; San Miguel - 6,569; Viga - 8,682; and, Virac - 28,468.

Meanwhile, Arizabal disclosed that only 70.76 percent of the projected potential voters actually registered during the registration period conducted from Oct. 17 to Dec. 27, 2000.

She said that for all 11 towns in Catanduanes, only 15,764 out of the projected 22,276 went to COMELEC offices to register as new voters. The projected potential number of new registrants was determined from enumeration data gathered in a house-to-house survey conducted by the commission last year.

The report states that in two towns, Baras and Gigmoto, the number of new registrants exceeded the COMELEC's expectations while less than 60 percent of potential voters submitted applications in Bagamanoc and Bato.

The list of new voters on a per-town basis (with potential new voters in parentheses): Bagamanoc - 602 (1,079); Baras - 1,094 (1,052); Bato - 1,202 (2,400); Caramoran - 2,113 (2,946); Gigmoto - 668 (648); Pandan - 1,299 (1,746); Panganiban - 590 (883); San Andres - 2,099 (3,905); San Miguel - 943 (1,122); Viga - 983 (1,238); and, Virac - 4,171 (5,257).

Acting PES Arizabal also bared that all municipal election offices have conducted Election Registration Board Hearings to approve or disapprove applications for registration, applications for transfer of voter registration records from one town to another, applications for administrative transfer from one barangay to another within the town, and change of status for the period Oct. 16 to Dec. 27, 2000. All election officers nationwide are also updating precinct and barangay maps in preparation for the May 14 polls.
