Major Developments

Medical missions benefit 1,513

More than 1,500 persons were benefitted during two medical and surgical missions held in Virac and Viga from Feb. 1-10, the Provincial Health Office reported last weekend.

During the "Oplan Alis Katarata" of the Lions Clubs International, District 301-D2 and the Catanduanes Class `57 Foundation, Inc., the group performed 20 cataract extractions and 18 pterygium excisions, aside from distributing free reading eyeglasses to 1,000 residents in Virac and Viga. Four hundred of the eyeglasses were donated by Atty. Joseph A. Santiago.

Another 224 were also given opthalmic consultation during the pre-screening conducted at the Catanduanes Eye Center while another team conducted a medical-dental mission in Viga.

The cataract/pterygium extraction team was composed of Drs. Rollo Marlante, Michael Chua, Ian Paredes and John Solamo, and nurse Roan Tatel while the dental mission team was composed of Dr. Baylon Manlangit, Dr. Manny Gonzales III, Dr. Aurora Gonzales, Dr. Jose Lorenzo Mina, Dr. Rodolfo Coronado and Dr. Mary Coronado. The medical team was provided by Class `57 through Dr. Reynaldo Panis and Dr. Nenita Panis.

Headed by Sightfirst chairman Ramon T. Bagadiong and District Governor Johnny T. Co, Jr. and Vice Dist. Gov. Alex M. Dumrique, the mission was also participated in by the Pasig Dr. Jose P. Rizal Lions Club, QC Malaya Lions Club, QC Talayan Executive Lions Club, QC Masigasig Lions Club, QC Achievers Lions Club, Taytay Pag-ibig Lions Club and Taytay Kabalikat Lions Club.

On the other hand, the week-long surgical mission conducted by the AY Foundation and Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC), Legaspi City Branch in coordination with the Provincial Health Office, the Diocese of Virac and the University of Perpetual Help Rizal Medical Center (UPHRMC) conducted a total of 251 major and minor surgeries and tooth extractions.

Of the eight major surgery cases, six were thyroidectomy and one each of mastectomy and removal of Bakers' cyst. Considered medium surgical cases were 13 hernia removals, one each of orchiedopexy and hemorrhoid, and two each of hydrocoelectomy and excision, for a total of 19.

The team also performed 63 minor surgeries, mainly excisions, while the dental service held in coordination with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) Catanduanes Chapter conducted 161 tooth extractions.
